The highly anticipated HBO documentary, which had been generating buzz in the cryptocurrency community since its trailer dropped, finally aired on Tuesday night, and it made a shocking revelation: Peter Todd was named as the creator of Bitcoin. The documentary delved into the origins of Bitcoin, showcasing various figures from its early days of development, ultimately focusing on the Bitcoin core developer, Todd.
In anticipation of the documentary’s big reveal, meme coins referencing various potential Bitcoin creators gained popularity. However, after Todd was identified as Satoshi, several of these meme coins experienced dramatic crashes. Coins inspired by late computer scientist Len Sassaman, who was briefly a favorite among cryptocurrency bettors, plummeted in value. LEN, for example, dropped as much as 85%, while SASHA, referencing Sassaman’s cat, plunged by 61%, according to CoinMarketCap.
A meme coin linked to Blockstream CEO Adam Back, who was also featured in the documentary, sank over 96%. Similarly, SZABO, inspired by Nick Szabo, whom tech mogul Elon Musk had once suggested could be Satoshi, tumbled nearly 90%.
Expectedly, a meme coin tied to Todd, PeterTodd, exploded in value by a whopping 1591% following the reveal.
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous individual credited with creating Bitcoin, has been a long-standing mystery. While several individuals have claimed or were believed to be Satoshi, their true identity remains unconfirmed. Despite being named in the documentary, Todd has vehemently denied being Satoshi.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $62,417.25, showing little change over the past 24 hours.
