The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating a fatal head-on collision that occurred on Highway 63 north of Mildred Lake on Tuesday, March 8, 2023, at approximately 10:38 a.m. The collision involved a pickup truck traveling north and a semi-tractor trailer traveling south. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the semi-tractor trailer was not physically injured. Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol may have been a factor in the collision. The Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services and the Alberta RCMP’s forensic collision reconstruction unit are continuing their investigation. Highway 63 was closed for several hours as a result of the collision, but has since reopened.
