Heatstroke vs Heat Exhaustion: Know the Difference to Stay Safe

Amidst India’s record-breaking temperatures, it’s imperative to differentiate between heatstroke and heat exhaustion to safeguard one’s health. Heatstroke arises when the body absorbs more heat than it can release, causing a rapid increase in body temperature to 41°C or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. This triggers an inflammatory response and can be life-threatening. Warning signs include dizziness, headache, impaired consciousness, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. If left untreated, heatstroke can lead to death within 24 hours. Heat exhaustion, though less severe, still requires attention. Extreme temperatures cause the body to overheat, leading to symptoms such as headache, hot and red face, excessive sweating, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Unlike heatstroke, where the body stops sweating, individuals with heat exhaustion may experience cool, clammy skin. To prevent heat-related illnesses, it’s crucial to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay adequately hydrated, and seek immediate medical assistance if heatstroke is suspected.
