The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for heatwave conditions over Gangetic West Bengal for a period of four days and three days each in Odisha and Bihar. The weather department has also placed Telangana, interior Karnataka, and coastal Andhra Pradesh under an ‘Orange Alert’ for the next 4-5 days due to potential heatwave conditions.
According to IMD scientist Soma Sen, Eastern India will bear the brunt of the heat waves, with slightly less intensity expected in Peninsular India. The department’s monthly forecast had predicted more severe and intense heat waves in these regions.
Jharkhand has received an ‘Orange or Yellow Alert,’ while Telangana, interior Karnataka, and coastal Andhra Pradesh have been upgraded to an ‘Orange Alert’ for the next 4-5 days.
Heatwave conditions have been present in Odisha since April 15 and in Gangetic West Bengal since April 17, according to the IMD. On Sunday, the Rayalseema region of Andhra Pradesh experienced a scorching heatwave. Parts of Kerala, including Kottayam and Alappuzha, have also been affected by intense heat.
The IMD has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Kerala’s Palakkad district due to the possibility of a heatwave. Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ in certain areas of Kollam and Thrissur districts due to the scorching heat and potential heatwave threat.
