Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Train Services, Triggers Floods in Pune

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in Pune, disrupting train services and triggering floods across the city. Central Railways announced the cancellation of several trains operating between Mumbai and Pune on Thursday, citing heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and rising water levels in the Badlapur-Vagani section. A post shared by the Pune DRM indicated that six trains have been scrapped due to the adverse weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Pune and surrounding areas, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated ghat regions. The situation in Pune has turned dire, with a flood-like situation emerging across large swathes of the city. Around 400 people were evacuated from low-lying areas as water inundated homes and rendered some areas nearly inaccessible.

Tragically, four people lost their lives in rain-related accidents across Pune on Thursday, with several others feared trapped. Rescue operations are underway, with Army and NDRF teams deployed to assist those affected.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed concern over the situation, stating that water levels have risen in homes and on roads across Pune, particularly around the Khadakwasla Dam and its catchment area. He confirmed that the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, and Police Commissioner are on high alert, with teams from NDRF and SDRF deployed for rescue efforts. The Army has been placed on standby, and preparations for airlifting operations have been made if necessary.
