The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in seven states, forecasting significant precipitation in Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, and Rajasthan on August 15th. Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with light showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.
The IMD’s press release dated August 15th indicates that widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand for the next 4-5 days. Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are also anticipated to receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during this period. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan (until August 17th), Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh (until August 21st), and Haryana and Delhi (on August 16th).
Moving westward, the IMD predicts that Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh will experience widespread light to moderate rainfall over the next seven days. Konkan & Goa, and the Gujarat Region are anticipated to see scattered to fairly widespread rainfall. Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Saurashtra & Kutch are expected to receive isolated to scattered rainfall.
Across eastern and northeastern India, the IMD forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall in east India and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall in the northeast throughout the week. Heavy rainfall is expected in West Bengal and Sikkim on August 16th, continuing in West Bengal until August 18th. Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to experience heavy rainfall until August 21st, Jharkhand until August 20th, Odisha until August 19th, and Assam and Meghalaya from August 19th to 21st.
In the south, the IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry until August 19th, in Kerala on August 19th, in Andhra Pradesh until August 17th, and in Karnataka on August 16th and 17th.
IMD scientist Soma Sen stated, “Due to cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal & Gangetic West Bengal, heavy rain is predicted in Odisha starting August 16th.”
