The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in six districts of Maharashtra. The alert, which will be in effect for three days from July 12 to 14, covers Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara. The IMD has stated that “Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas very likely.” A yellow alert has been issued for these districts for July 11.
For Mumbai and Thane, the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for the next four days, until July 14. Palghar is expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on July 12 and 13. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the region are expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The RMC has also issued a yellow alert for Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Vardha, Washim, and Yavatmal from July 12 to 14. The RMC forecast includes the possibility of “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning most likely to occur at isolated places.”
Two days ago, Mumbai and surrounding areas experienced heavy showers that disrupted suburban train services and flight operations. Some areas in Mumbai received over 300 mm of rainfall in just six hours, leading to flooded roads and low-lying areas. Schools and colleges were forced to close.
The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls over Northeast India and adjoining east India during the next two days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka from July 12 to 15, and over Goa for the next five days. The Western Himalayan Region is expected to experience a heavy rainfall spell from July 11 to 13, and East Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next five days.
