Heavy Rains Lash India: Red Alert Issued for Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, warning of heavy downpours on Sunday, July 14. The red alert, the highest level of warning, indicates the potential for extremely heavy rainfall in these states. Meanwhile, an orange alert for heavy showers is in place for Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Kerala, and several northeastern states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

On Saturday, July 13, heavy rains in Valsad, Gujarat, caused the water level in Madhuban dam to rise. The Disaster Management Authority reported that many low-lying areas were inundated, and the national highway was also flooded. Teams from disaster cells were deployed to drain the water from affected areas.

The IMD weather bulletin, issued on July 13, predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Karnataka until July 18. Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience wet spells until July 17. The southern states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are forecast to receive downpours over the next two days, while Andhra Pradesh will experience showers until July 15.

Maharashtra’s Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued a red alert for four districts: Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri. The RMC expects “heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely” in these districts. An orange alert has been issued for Thane, Raigad, and Pune, and a yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar.

The weather department predicts heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan until July 17, in Uttar Pradesh until July 15, and in Himachal Pradesh on July 16 and 17. Odisha is likely to receive heavy rainfall until July 17, while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur will experience wet spells until July 16. Other eastern and northeastern states, including West Bengal and Sikkim, will possibly experience precipitation until July 15, while Bihar may see showers on July 14.
