The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, warning of heavy downpours on Monday, September 9. An orange alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and West Bengal. The monsoon rains continue to bring wet spells across India, with several states placed on yellow alert.
A ‘low pressure area’ is forming over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, prompting the weather agency to issue nowcast rainfall warnings. This depression is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall in most places in Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Heavy rainfall is anticipated today and on September 10.
The IMD reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved slowly north-northwestwards at a speed of 7 kmph during the past 6 hours. It intensified into a Deep Depression and was centered at 2330 hours IST on September 8, 2024.
The IMD predicts the depression will move nearly northwestwards and cross the Odisha coast near Puri by noon on September 9. Afterward, it is expected to move west-north-westwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the following two days. These weather conditions are likely to bring rain to many districts of Odisha until September 11.
In Delhi, the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasts generally cloudy skies accompanied by light rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day. Wet spells are expected to continue until September 14. The maximum temperature is anticipated to hover around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will settle around 25 degrees Celsius on Monday.
