A tragic helicopter crash in Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula has claimed the lives of 17 people. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 9, 2023, after a Mi-8 helicopter carrying 19 tourists and 3 crew members went missing shortly after takeoff on Saturday.
The helicopter, operated by a local tourism company, was en route to a popular hiking destination in the region known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and pristine wilderness. Rescue teams, alerted to the missing aircraft, initiated a search operation and located the wreckage on Sunday morning in a hilly area at a height of 900 meters.
The remains of the helicopter were found scattered across a slope near the top of a wooded hill, and aerial footage captured by Russia’s emergency situations ministry shows the extent of the devastation.
Tragically, rescuers recovered 17 bodies from the crash site. The search effort was halted until daybreak, with rescuers setting up camp near the crash site.

A year earlier, in July 2020, a plane crashed while attempting to land on the peninsula, killing all 28 passengers and crew onboard.
