Helicopter Crash Lawsuit: Three Sue Pilot, Agencies after 2022 Incident in Ohio

Ohio Helicopter Crash Lawsuit: Three Individuals Seek Compensation

A medical helicopter crash in Milford Township, Ohio, in July 2022, has led to a lawsuit filed by three individuals who sustained injuries or suffered losses as a result of the incident. Flight nurses Lisa McPhillips and Erin Monroe were onboard the helicopter when it crashed, while Justin McPhillips, Lisa’s husband, is suing due to the loss of benefits stemming from his wife’s injuries.

The lawsuit alleges that the pilot of the helicopter, operated by Air Methods Corporation, violated safety protocols by failing to perform a 360-degree reconnaissance before attempting to land. As a result, the helicopter collided with high-tension power lines in the area, causing significant injuries to McPhillips and Monroe.

Lisa McPhillips suffered severe and permanent injuries, including a burst fracture of her spine and damage to her spinal cord, which will require ongoing care. Erin Monroe sustained serious personal injuries and emotional distress as a consequence of the crash.

In addition to the pilot and Air Methods Corporation, the lawsuit also names Milford Township, the Milford Township Fire Department, the Milford Township Fire Association, and individual firefighters as defendants. The plaintiffs allege that the firefighters failed to adequately illuminate the landing zone and advise the pilot of the presence of power lines, contributing to the crash.

The plaintiffs are seeking full compensation for their injuries and damages, as well as reimbursement for expenses incurred as a result of the incident. They are also requesting a jury trial to determine the liability of the defendants and the appropriate level of compensation.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted a preliminary investigation into the crash, and the pilot claimed that he did not see the power lines before impact. The NTSB report indicated that the pilot was wearing night vision goggles but was unable to locate the wires. The pilot stated that he estimated the wires were further out from the landing zone and descended accordingly.

The lawsuit filed by McPhillips, Monroe, and Justin McPhillips highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols in aviation operations to prevent accidents and protect the lives of those onboard.
