In a groundbreaking move for the storied house of Hermès, the luxury brand has unveiled its first-ever chypre fragrance, aptly named Barénia. This captivating scent marks a significant milestone in Hermès’ olfactory legacy, having been crafted over a decade by Christine Nagel, the brand’s creative and olfactory heritage director.
Nagel’s dedication to this project is evident in the meticulous process that went into its creation. She experimented with countless variations, ultimately conducting a staggering 998 trials before achieving the desired outcome. “When I started at the maison, I knew immediately that I would make a chypre,” Nagel shared. “For me, it’s the most elegant and timeless structure there is.”
Staying true to the classic chypre structure, Barénia boasts a harmonious blend of citrus notes at the top, floral heart, and woody base. However, the fragrance ventures beyond the traditional, introducing a unique twist with the inclusion of fresh water lily and earthy elements such as patchouli, moss, and musk, resulting in a signature scent that is both familiar and distinctive.
The name itself pays homage to Hermès’ rich heritage, drawing inspiration from a natural leather known for its adaptability. Just as the leather molds itself to the wearer’s movements, Barénia aims to seamlessly adapt to each individual’s skin, offering a personalized olfactory experience.
To complement the exquisite scent, Hermès enlisted the renowned designer Philippe Mouquet to create the fragrance bottle. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Collier de Chien bracelet, known for its elegant dog collar design, Mouquet crafted an elliptical bottle adorned with a metal plaque and four studs. This intricate detailing pays tribute to the brand’s craftsmanship and the intricate design of the original accessory.
The eagerly awaited Barénia is now available in Brazil, presented in two sizes: a 60 ml bottle for R$ 864 and a 100 ml bottle for R$ 1.058. This fragrance promises to be a timeless addition to any perfume enthusiast’s collection, offering a sophisticated and alluring scent that embodies the essence of Hermès’ refined artistry.
