Robert Crimo III, the alleged perpetrator of the tragic Highland Park mass shooting that occurred on July 4, 2022, recently appeared in court for a case management hearing. The hearing, which lasted only three minutes, was held to discuss scheduling issues and address Crimo’s request for access to communication devices while in custody. Judge Victoria Rossetti presided over the hearing and granted Crimo permission to make audio-only phone calls to a select group of four family members, including his parents and two siblings. Crimo will also be provided with a computer tablet.
This modification to the previous order, which prohibited Crimo from using phones or the internet in jail, was made after discussions between the judge and attorneys in the case. The decision reflects a consideration of both Crimo’s need to maintain contact with his family and the need to ensure the integrity of the ongoing legal proceedings.
Crimo faces multiple charges, including seven counts of first-degree murder and dozens of other felony charges. He is scheduled to stand trial next year. While the trial date approaches, the city of Highland Park has announced plans to commemorate the victims of the tragedy and to resume the July 4th parade along a new route. A remembrance ceremony will also be held earlier on Independence Day to honor the lives lost in the senseless act of violence.
