Himachal Pradesh, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and popular tourist destinations, is set to make a significant leap towards sustainable travel. The state government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu, has unveiled an ambitious plan to electrify the entire fleet of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) by March 2025. This bold initiative, announced during HRTC’s golden jubilee celebrations, signifies a commitment to eco-friendly transportation and a cleaner future for the state.
The transition to electric vehicles is viewed as a crucial step in reducing HRTC’s environmental footprint. It not only aligns with the global push for cleaner transportation but also addresses the need for a more financially sustainable future for the corporation. Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the pivotal role HRTC plays in the state’s development, acknowledging its trusted and reliable presence across the challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh.
Beyond the environmental benefits, this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving the lives of HRTC employees. Under the current administration, significant strides have been made in employee welfare, including the implementation of the old pension scheme for 7,300 employees, the regularization of 1,546 contract workers, and the creation of 608 new positions. Furthermore, 550 additional roles will be filled soon, and 421 employees have been promoted, demonstrating the government’s dedication to workforce development.
This ambitious plan to achieve 100% electric public transport by 2025 positions Himachal Pradesh as a leader in sustainable transportation within India. This initiative is poised to not only reduce emissions and promote eco-tourism but also pave the way for a greener and more prosperous future for the state and its people.
