Tensions flared in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, on Thursday as Hindu right-wing groups staged a massive protest demanding the demolition of an under-construction mosque in the Sanjauli locality. Hundreds of demonstrators, many carrying saffron flags and banners depicting Lord Ram, gathered in Chaura Maidan, near the Vidhan Sabha, responding to a call for “Sanatan unity” by Dev Bhumi Shatriya Sangathan President Rumit Singh Thakur.
The demand for the mosque’s demolition stems from an attack on a businessman in the Malyana area, allegedly carried out by members of the Muslim community. The groups allege the mosque is “illegal” and are also calling for action against those responsible for the attack, demanding charges of attempted murder.
However, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh clarified that the mosque is built on government land and the matter has been in legal limbo for the past 14 years. He assured that the government is taking action regarding any structural illegalities.
Adding to the complexities of the situation, Thakur also alleged that many “outsiders” are entering Himachal Pradesh and demanded the government verify their identities and business registrations. He claimed to have received assurances from Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu regarding action in this regard.
The chief minister addressed the situation, emphasizing that all residents of Himachal Pradesh have equal rights and he respects all religions. While he acknowledged the right to peaceful protests, he stressed that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh echoed the government’s stance, stating that the issue of the mosque’s construction has been under consideration by the Shimla Municipal Corporation Commissioner for a long time. He confirmed that if any illegalities are found, appropriate action will be taken.
The protests and the government’s response highlight the delicate balance between religious freedom and maintaining law and order in the state. The situation is likely to remain under scrutiny as the government investigates the allegations and addresses the concerns of various groups involved.
