Hindu Priest Offers Vedic Prayer at Democratic National Convention

The third day of the Democratic National Convention commenced with a distinct and moving moment: a Vedic prayer delivered by Indian-American priest Rakesh Bhatt. Bhatt, a senior Hindu priest from the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Maryland, formally opened the proceedings with a powerful message of unity and justice.

“Even if we have differences, when it comes to the nation, we have to be united, and it moves us towards justice for all,” Bhatt stated, according to PTI. His prayer resonated with the core values of the Democratic Party, emphasizing a united front for the betterment of society.

Bhatt, hailing from Bengaluru, India, is a Madhwa priest trained in Rig Veda and Tantrasaara (Maadhva) Agama. He holds degrees in Sanskrit, English, and Kannada, reflecting his deep knowledge of both Eastern and Western traditions. He has served in various prominent Hindu temples, including Badrinath and Raghavendra Swami Koil in Salem, before joining the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in 2013.

“We are one universal family. Truth is our foundation and always prevails. Lead us from unreal to real. from darkness to the light, and from death to immortality. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti,” Bhatt declared in his prayer, invoking the universal longing for truth, light, and transcendence.

Ajay Bhutoria, Deputy National Finance Chair of the Democratic Party, highlighted the significance of Bhatt’s prayer. “Rakesh Bhatt’s Hindu prayer at the DNC today is a significant moment, showcasing the Democratic Party’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity,” Bhutoria stated. “It is heartening to see the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the Indian American community being honored on such a prominent stage. This moment reflects the growing influence and recognition of our community within the fabric of American society.”

Bhatt’s prayer served as a powerful reminder of the unifying power of spirituality and the importance of celebrating diversity within the American tapestry. It marked a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and understanding in the political landscape.
