Hisense CanvasTV: A Budget-Friendly Alternative to Samsung’s The Frame

Hisense’s new CanvasTV, a direct competitor to Samsung’s popular The Frame TV, is now available for order in its 65-inch size for $1,300. This represents a $700 discount compared to Samsung’s $2,000 regular price for its 65-inch Frame TV. Previously, Hisense announced that the 55-inch CanvasTV would cost $999, but this smaller model hasn’t yet hit retail. Hisense has a history of offering deep discounts on its TVs, so we might see both sizes of CanvasTV (officially known as Hisense Class S7 CanvasTV 4K QLED Google TV) drop in price in the near future.

Like The Frame, the CanvasTV boasts interchangeable frames. The TV comes with a simulated teak frame, but additional frames will be available in the future, magnetically attaching to the TV’s chassis. Hisense hasn’t released pricing for these frames yet; however, Samsung charges between $145 and $245 for its optional 55-inch The Frame bezels. The TV is designed for flush mounting on walls, and includes a specifically designed wall mount to simplify installation. Alternatively, the included legs can be used as a stand mount.

CanvasTVs feature an Art Mode, allowing you to choose from preloaded, free artwork in various styles, including abstract, modern, and renaissance. You can also upload your own photos. These can be displayed in portrait or landscape orientation, with a choice of stylized mats for framing. When in Art Mode, a motion sensor detects movement in the room, automatically switching the TV off when no one is present.

CanvasTV models are equipped with a 4K QLED panel capable of delivering over a billion shades of color, according to Hisense. Its “Hi-Matte” anti-glare layer aims to provide digital artwork with the “depth and texture of real paintings,” while an ambient light sensor adjusts picture settings to match changing room conditions. The panel boasts a 144Hz refresh rate, featuring auto low-latency mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate (VRR), and motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC) technology. It’s compatible with a wide range of HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and HDR10+ Adaptive.

CanvasTV incorporates a multichannel 2.0.2 surround sound system, however, Dolby Atmos is not listed among the TV’s audio specifications. The user experience is powered by Google TV, offering all the usual features like thousands of available apps and hundreds of Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) channels. Google Assistant and Google Cast are built-in, while Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit compatibility further enhance the CanvasTV’s smart home capabilities.
