Hitachi Rail Revolutionizes Urban Rail with 5G Signaling

Hitachi Rail is on the verge of revolutionizing urban rail systems with its innovative implementation of 5G digital signaling capabilities. This cutting-edge technology promises to significantly reduce lifecycle costs and enhance data-driven insights for train networks, ushering in a new era of efficiency and reliability.

At the heart of this transformation is Hitachi Rail’s advanced digital signaling solution, SelTracTM CBTC. This system leverages train-to-ground telecommunications to streamline traffic management on rail lines. SelTracTM CBTC has gained widespread adoption across new metro and light rail systems, and is increasingly being implemented to upgrade existing networks. Compared to conventional systems, CBTC technology boasts higher capacity, improved safety, and greater overall reliability.

While CBTC has proven its effectiveness in enhancing rail performance globally, it has traditionally relied on legacy communication technologies like radio and Wi-Fi. Recognizing the limitations of these older systems, Hitachi Rail has pioneered the use of 5G to address these shortcomings. This innovative approach leverages public or private 5G networks, significantly reducing the need for trackside infrastructure. Fewer 5G Radio Access Points are required compared to existing Wi-Fi solutions, resulting in a more streamlined and cost-effective deployment.

The benefits of 5G technology extend beyond reduced infrastructure needs. It offers high-performance connectivity, even in challenging environments such as tunnels, providing reliable communication for critical operations. Its increased bandwidth enables advanced digital asset management solutions, like those developed by Hitachi Rail, that deliver real-time data from trains. This data allows operators to optimize both train and track operations and maintenance, ensuring smoother and more efficient service.

Looking towards the future, 5G’s enhanced network capacity empowers operators to offer additional services without the need for new radio infrastructure. This future-proofing ensures compatibility with forthcoming technologies like 6G, making 5G a crucial investment for the long-term management of radio access infrastructure, which typically has a lifespan of 30 years.

Hitachi Rail’s SelTracTM CBTC solution, enhanced with 5G communication, is making its debut on two of the busiest metro networks in the world. In New York, a private 5G network is being implemented for the Crosstown Line, which serves 70,000 passengers daily. In Hong Kong, a 5G overlay network will be integrated into the existing SelTracTM solution for the International Airport’s Automatic People Mover. These projects will be among the first to utilize 5G connectivity for mission-critical signaling applications, setting a new standard for urban rail networks.

“Our first-of-its-kind 5G solution is a game changer for the urban rail market,” stated Ziad Rizk, Managing Director, Urban Rail Signalling, Hitachi Rail. “The new 5G system plays a critical role in delivering reliable and high-capacity CBTC operations to metro operators. We offer different deployment options that best suit the customers’ needs, as seen with our two references. We are proud to deliver this transformative technology to our customers and the benefits it will deliver to passengers.”

Hitachi Rail’s acquisition of Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) business on May 31, 2024, has further bolstered its position in the urban rail market. The acquisition expanded its workforce to 24,000 employees across 51 countries and significantly broadened its product and technology portfolio, particularly enhancing its expertise in urban rail signaling.

From September 24 to 27, Hitachi Rail will showcase a range of its urban rail products, including its 5G solution, at the global rail exhibition, InnoTrans, in Berlin. This is a testament to Hitachi Rail’s commitment to driving innovation and shaping the future of urban transportation.
