Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform One Earns Top Spot for Energy Efficiency and Performance

Hitachi Vantara, the data storage and hybrid cloud management subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has announced that its new Virtual Storage Platform One Block storage appliance has achieved remarkable recognition for its energy efficiency and performance. The appliance has earned the ENERGY STAR certification and has been named the top storage solution in the ENERGY STAR NVSS Disk Online 4 category. Notably, Hitachi Vantara holds the top three spots in this category, showcasing its commitment to developing energy-efficient and sustainable technologies.

The ENERGY STAR certification process rigorously evaluates storage solutions based on their IOPS (input/output operations per second) per Watt, a critical metric for measuring efficiency. The Virtual Storage Platform One Block 28 model achieved the highest ranking with 538 IOPS per watt, followed by the Block 26 model at 409 IOPS per watt, and the E1090 model at 368 IOPS per watt. This recognition is particularly timely as businesses prioritize sustainability without compromising performance and reliability.

Recent surveys highlight the growing concern among IT decision-makers regarding the energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with AI/ML and legacy data architectures. Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform One directly addresses these concerns. It is designed to improve performance by consolidating workloads onto fewer systems, leading to greater operational efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, the platform incorporates Dynamic Carbon Reduction technology, which minimizes energy consumption during periods of low activity by switching CPUs into eco-mode. The “always on compression” feature further enhances energy savings by transitioning from inline data reduction to post-processing, reducing the CO2 footprint by up to 30-40%.

Hitachi Vantara’s commitment to sustainable innovation is evident in its broader initiatives. All its storage arrays have obtained CFP (Carbon Footprint of Products) certification under the SuMPO (Sustainable Management Promotion Organization) environmental labeling program. This ensures transparency and accountability by undergoing third-party verification of greenhouse gas emissions per terabyte per year (kg-CO2eq). Furthermore, all Hitachi Vantara’s mid-market solutions are ENERGY STAR certified, demonstrating their commitment to delivering energy-efficient and high-performing products. This dedication to sustainability has earned Hitachi Vantara a Gold Medal rating for Sustainability from EcoVadis, a globally recognized leader in assessing corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability practices.

For over a decade, Hitachi Vantara has consistently strived to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the entire system lifecycle, from material procurement to production, logistics, use, disposal, and recycling. This ongoing commitment to lowering carbon footprints solidifies Hitachi Vantara’s position as a leader in the data storage industry, demonstrating its commitment to creating a sustainable future.
