HKIA Registers Strong Growth in April 2024

HKIA Experiences Double-Digit Growth in April 2024

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has recorded impressive growth in passenger and cargo traffic in April 2024. The airport handled a total of 4.23 million passengers, a significant 35.9% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge was largely attributed to the long Easter holidays, which resulted in increased travel demand across all passenger segments.

Flight movements also saw a substantial increase of 34.7%, reaching 29,055. The growth was particularly noticeable in traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and Japan.

Cargo throughput at HKIA maintained its positive trajectory, registering a year-on-year increase of 13.9% to 394,000 tonnes. Exports continued to drive this growth, with a significant 24.7% increase compared to April 2023. Cargo traffic to and from North America, Europe, and Taiwan contributed significantly to the overall increase.

For the first four months of 2024, HKIA’s passenger traffic reached 16.9 million, marking a remarkable 67.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Flight movements also rose by 55.3% to 115,285, while cargo volume increased by 17.7% to over 1.5 million tonnes.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume surged by 200.9% to 46.3 million, while flight movements and cargo throughput witnessed year-on-year increases of 83.9% and 11.0%, respectively.

In line with its commitment to providing enhanced connectivity, Hong Kong Airlines launched a new direct flight service between HKIA and Vientiane Wattay International Airport in Laos in April. This new route is expected to facilitate business and leisure travel between the two regions, strengthening HKIA’s position as a regional aviation hub.
