H&M Foundation Shifts Focus to Decarbonize Textile Industry with Global Change Award 2025

The H&M Foundation is making a significant shift in its strategic direction, setting its sights on a greener future for the textile industry. The foundation has announced a new focus on supporting the industry’s efforts to halve its greenhouse gas emissions every decade, culminating in a 50% reduction by 2050. This commitment to a just and fair transition for both people and the planet is reflected in the latest iteration of the foundation’s flagship initiative: the Global Change Award 2025 (GCA).

This year, GCA is searching for innovative ideas that tackle high emission areas across the entire textile industry value chain. From developing sustainable materials and processes to promoting responsible production and mindful consumption, the award is open to a wide range of solutions. The foundation is also seeking ‘wildcard’ ideas that support the broader goal of decarbonization.

The H&M Foundation recognizes the urgency of tackling climate change and the pivotal role of the textile industry in achieving global climate goals. As Karl-Johan Persson, Board Member of the H&M Foundation, aptly states, “The textile industry needs all hands-on deck if we are going to meet our climate goals by 2050, and we must ensure this transition is fair for everyone.” He emphasizes the importance of innovation as a key driver for decarbonization, highlighting GCA’s potential to identify and nurture future changemakers.

Since its launch in 2015, the Global Change Award has provided support to 46 innovative ideas, awarding a total of 8 million euros in grants. While the program continues to award 10 winners annually, each receiving 200,000 EUR, there are key updates to the 2025 iteration:

*

New Focus:

Decarbonizing the textile industry is the central theme of the award.

*

Holistic Approach:

Changemakers will be equipped with a comprehensive approach that considers both people and the planet.

*

Wider Range of Changemakers:

The nomination process will be utilized to ensure a diverse range of innovators are involved.

*

Systems Change Approach:

The program will encourage innovators to consider the interconnectedness of the textile value chain and its impact on people.

Annie Lindmark, Programme Director for Innovation at the H&M Foundation, emphasizes the need for a holistic perspective on decarbonization. “While the industry is hungry for innovation, the holistic perspective to decarbonisation is often lacking, and the critical early stages of an innovator’s journey overlooked – this is where philanthropy can make a real difference.”

Beyond financial support, the winners will gain access to a valuable network of mentors, collaborators, and industry leaders. In partnership with Accenture and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the H&M Foundation will provide winners with a year-long Changemaker Programme, tailored to support their progress.

The Global Change Award 2025 winners will be announced in April 2025, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable and equitable textile industry.
