London’s HOFA Gallery is making waves in the art world with its latest exhibition, ‘SPACES.’ This groundbreaking showcase features the works of eight pioneering digital artists who are redefining the very essence of art through the power of technology.
As part of Frieze London 2024, one of the most anticipated cultural events in the UK capital, ‘SPACES’ is poised to captivate audiences with its captivating fusion of art and technology. The exhibition, curated by HOFA co-founder Elio D’Anna, delves into the dynamic interplay between human creativity and the ever-evolving world of digital media.
Among the highlights is Sougwen Chung’s ‘Spectral,’ a remarkable collaboration between human and machine. This mesmerizing piece showcases a telekinetic robotic arm, D.O.U.G._4, meticulously painting alongside Chung, guided by her brainwaves. The process translates her thoughts into precise movements on a transparent canvas, creating an ethereal visual dialogue between artist and technology.
Another standout piece comes from Krista Kim, a cultural leader at the World Economic Forum and founder of Techism. Kim presents a triptych of her iconic meditative gradient works, blending digital software with UV-printed physical mediums. Her art, previously displayed in prestigious venues like Las Vegas and Times Square, exudes vibrant colorscapes designed to elevate consciousness and inspire positivity within the digital sphere.
Turkish-American new media maestro Refik Anadol is also featured with his captivating work, ‘Winds of Yawanawa #888.’ This piece is part of his ‘Winds of Yawanawa’ collection, a mesmerizing series that transforms weather data from the Yawanawa tribe’s Amazonian village into 1,000 unique NFT Data Paintings. Anadol’s work masterfully intertwines ancient cultures with the digital world we inhabit today, offering a compelling reflection on our interconnectedness.
Beyond these prominent figures, the 500 square-meter gallery in London’s upscale Mayfair neighborhood will also showcase works by Colombian writer Ana Maria Caballero, Dutch visual artist Joseph Klibansky, and London’s own Random International art collective.
HOFA, an early champion of digital art, has been at the forefront of embracing new media. In 2018, the gallery made history by becoming the first in the world to accept cryptocurrency payments for its collection. “Starting to accept cryptocurrency was a first dip into this whole universe that is Web3,” D’Anna explained to Euronews Culture. “It allowed us to start developing tech, allowed us to start getting the artists interested in working in this different layer.”
