Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives is thrilled to announce the inaugural ‘Kandooma Manta Month,’ a month-long celebration dedicated to manta ray conservation and guest experiences. Starting on September 1, 2024, the resort will host a series of captivating activities, building upon the success of last year’s week-long celebration which started on World Manta Day.
“We’re excited to dedicate an entire month to celebrating manta rays,” said Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. “This initiative is not just about raising awareness—it’s about giving our guests the chance to connect with nature, learn about conservation, and contribute to the preservation of one of the ocean’s most majestic species.”
The Maldives is home to the world’s largest population of reef manta rays, with over 5,831 identified individuals. These gentle giants, known as ‘Madi’ in the Maldivian Dhivehi language, are a crucial part of the marine ecosystem. The resort has a personal connection to these creatures, having successfully rescued a Giant Oceanic Manta Ray entangled in ghost nets last year, along with General Manager Mark. This rescued manta was later identified and named ‘Kandooma’ by The Manta Trust, adding to the 915 Oceanic Manta Rays recorded in Maldivian waters by the organization.
