Honda Unveils Ambitious Plans for Global Expansion with India as Key Hub

Honda has embarked on an ambitious project to establish a global platform for their small and medium-car portfolio. This initiative, known as PF2, will see India not only become the primary manufacturing base but also a central hub for supplying vehicles both domestically and internationally.

Sources reveal that the PF2 platform will support both ICE (internal combustion engine) and EV (electric vehicle) powertrains, reflecting Honda’s strategic approach in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. Despite the growing popularity of EVs, Honda is not yet convinced about the feasibility of developing a dedicated EV platform or ‘skateboard’ due to the fluctuating demand for electric vehicles.

While Honda has experienced a dip in sales in India during the last half of 2023, with only 16,482 units sold compared to over 33,600 units sold between September 2023 and March 2024, the company remains committed to its expansion plans. This commitment is evident in the upcoming launches of various vehicles built on the PF2 platform.

The new-generation Honda City, expected to launch in 2028, will be built on the PF2 platform. This sixth-generation model will retain the current model’s offering of naturally aspirated petrol and strong hybrid powertrain options. A significant visual revamp is expected for the new City, promising a radical departure from its current design. Production of the new City is slated to commence in May 2028.

Prior to the launch of the next-generation City, Honda plans to introduce a new seven-seater SUV, also built on the PF2 platform. Positioned above the Elevate in Honda’s lineup, this upcoming SUV is strategically designed with the Indian market’s feedback in mind. The research and development of this SUV is spearheaded by Honda’s teams in Japan and Thailand. Upon its launch in India, this SUV will be pitted against formidable rivals such as the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari, and Hyundai Alcazar.

Further solidifying Honda’s commitment to the Indian market, a compact SUV, developed on the PF2 platform, is anticipated to launch in the first half of 2029. This marks a shift from Honda’s earlier plans to design a sub-4 meter SUV using the Brio platform. The company has opted for the PF2 platform, which offers a compelling blend of quality and cost-effectiveness.

In addition to its ICE and hybrid vehicle offerings, Honda plans to launch its second EV in 2029. While details remain limited, this EV is expected to be an SUV positioned just below the Elevate. This launch further demonstrates Honda’s commitment to electrifying its lineup and catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles in India.

Honda’s strategic focus on the Indian market, combined with its ambitious global expansion plans, signifies its confidence in the potential of the PF2 platform to propel the company towards its future goals. The PF2 platform will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of Honda’s expanding vehicle portfolio, both domestically and internationally.
