## Hong Kong Airport City: A Global Landmark in the Making
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is not just a gateway to the city, it’s evolving into a global landmark, a vibrant destination that seamlessly blends commercial activities, art, entertainment, and leisure. This ambitious project, known as Airport City, is spearheaded by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) and aims to become the largest of its kind in the region, injecting new life into Hong Kong’s economy and the broader Greater Bay Area.
The blueprint for Airport City, initially unveiled in 2019, goes beyond traditional airport functions, strategically integrating associated business sectors to create a thriving ecosystem. Leveraging the airport’s unique geographic advantages and capitalizing on the opportunities presented by new infrastructure projects, AAHK is actively advancing several key developments:
A Thriving Ecosystem:
*
Art & Culture:
Hong Kong is poised to become a leading global art hub, and Airport City is playing a key role in this transformation. A dedicated art ecosystem is being developed, featuring a network of galleries and studios, along with a purpose-built large-scale storage facility for artworks—a first for Hong Kong. This initiative, coupled with exhibitions at AsiaWorld-Expo, will solidify Hong Kong’s position as a world-class art marketplace.*
Entertainment & Events:
The second phase of AsiaWorld-Expo development is in full swing, bringing a massive multi-purpose indoor arena with a capacity of over 20,000 spectators. This addition will host a diverse range of world-class entertainment events and international commercial activities, drawing visitors from the Greater Bay Area and beyond to experience Hong Kong’s vibrant cultural scene.*
Yachting & Recreation:
Harnessing the water resources surrounding the airport island, AAHK is creating Hong Kong’s largest marina, complete with supporting facilities and around 600 berths. This will transform Airport City into a premier yachting destination in Asia, particularly within the Greater Bay Area. Additionally, a variety of water-based leisure and recreational activities are planned, adding to the overall appeal of the destination.*
Sports & Adventure:
On Hong Kong Port Island, AAHK is developing a unique sportainment complex that blends innovative indoor and outdoor sports concepts with adventure and entertainment. This complex is designed to be a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking engaging sports and trendy activities.*
Culinary Delights:
Recognizing HKIA’s excellence in air cargo, particularly in importing fresh and high-quality food products from around the globe, AAHK is creating a “Jet Fresh Market” on Hong Kong Port Island. This market will not only serve as a hub for premium fresh foods but will also provide visitors with a unique vantage point to observe aircraft movements, offering an exceptional gastronomic experience.A Vision for the Future:
Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, underscores the significance of this project: “HKIA is a leading international aviation hub in Asia. With the three-runway system fully operational by the end of this year, we are ready to move forward with innovative projects across various market segments. The expansion of the development blueprint will leverage Hong Kong’s unique advantages and create synergy among various projects to transform the Airport City into a new landmark of Asia. It will be a distinct tourist hotspot for visitors from Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and all over the world, especially premium visitors, injecting impetus into the economic growth of Hong Kong and the region.”
With a projected completion date between 2026 and 2031, Airport City is poised to become a major catalyst for economic growth, attracting tourists and investors alike, solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a global leader in tourism, commerce, and entertainment.
