In a chilling and gruesome turn of events in Odisha, India, a man out on bail for the rape of a minor girl was arrested for her brutal murder and dismemberment. The accused, identified as Kunu Kissan, had been arrested in August 2023 for raping the minor in Sundargarh district. Released on bail in December 2023, he chillingly used this freedom to orchestrate the victim’s death.
The Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police, Parmar Smit Parshottamdas, revealed details of the horrific crime to the Press Trust of India (PTI). The victim’s family filed a missing person’s report on December 7th, 2023. The girl, a resident of Sundargarh, had been staying with her aunt in Jharsuguda town. Initial investigation, aided by CCTV footage, showed her traveling on a motorcycle with two individuals wearing helmets, obscuring their identities.
This is where technological advancements played a crucial role in apprehending the perpetrator. Police utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology to trace Kissan back to Sundargarh. During interrogation, he confessed to the heinous crime, detailing how he murdered the girl and scattered her body parts in two different locations.
Kissan’s confession paints a horrifying picture. He first slit the victim’s throat with a sharp knife near National Highway 143, connecting Rourkela and Deogarh. He then disposed of her body parts in Tarkera Nali and Balughat along the Brahmani River. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) was deployed in a prolonged search operation along the river, eventually recovering all parts of the victim’s body, including her head.
The arrest of Kissan and an accomplice marks a significant step in bringing justice to the victim and her family. However, the motive behind the brutal crime is equally disturbing. Kissan confessed that he had planned the murder since his release from jail, fearing that the victim’s testimony in court would lead to his conviction.
