Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is expanding the ongoing investigation into antisemitism on college campuses, led by the Education & Workforce Committee, to include six other House committees. The committees involved will be Education & the Workforce, Energy & Commerce, Oversight, the Judiciary, Ways & Means, and Science, Space & Technology.
This widening of the investigation reflects the broad impact of antisemitism on college campuses and the need for a comprehensive approach to address it. The investigation will examine the role of universities in preventing and addressing antisemitism, as well as the funding sources and legal compliance of anti-Israel demonstrations.
Speaker Johnson’s announcement comes amid a wave of anti-Israel demonstrations on college campuses across the country. These demonstrations have often been accompanied by intimidating and disruptive behavior, which have raised concerns about the safety of Jewish students.
During a visit to Columbia University, where anti-Israel demonstrations have been ongoing, Speaker Johnson met with Jewish students who expressed feeling unsafe on campus. He denounced the protesters as a “mob” and criticized professors and other faculty who have joined the protests.
The investigation launched by House Republicans is a significant step towards addressing the growing problem of antisemitism on college campuses. It will provide a comprehensive examination of the issue and help to identify solutions to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
