The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, led by Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), is investigating patterns of antisemitism on campuses and the failure of universities to protect Jewish students. Yale University President Dr. Peter Salovey will be interviewed on June 20, and University of Michigan President Dr. Santa J. Ono will be interviewed on August 9. The interviews will be closed to the press. Foxx said in a statement that the committee received the letter and President Ono will appear for the transcribed interview. A spokesperson for Yale University said they are committed to cooperating with the committee. Several university presidents have already appeared before Congress, including those from Northwestern University, Rutgers University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, who testified at a hearing earlier this month called “Calling for Accountability: Stopping Antisemitic College Chaos.” The hearing came after a pro-Palestine encampment at Columbia University dispersed and schools across the country continue to face demonstrations, some of which have included antisemitism. The outbreak of antisemitism on college campuses has coincided with the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas in Gaza, which began in October 2023. According to the Anti-Defamation League, there was a 361% increase in antisemitic incidents in the three months following the Hamas attack compared to the same period in 2022.
