Feeling stuck with a username you’re no longer happy with on Steam? Unlike some platforms that restrict username changes or charge for them, Steam allows you to update your username whenever you want. Whether you’re embarrassed by a past mistake or simply desire a fresh start, it’s easy to switch things up. Here’s how to change your Steam username on both the desktop and mobile apps.
Changing Your Username on the Desktop App
1. Open the Steam desktop app and hover over your current username located at the top of the window.
2. From the drop-down menu, select “Profile.”
3. On your profile page, look to the right-hand sidebar and click on “Edit Profile.”
4. On the next page, locate the “Profile name” field and type in your desired new username.
5. Once you’re satisfied with the change, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Save.”
Changing Your Username on the Mobile App
1. Launch the official Steam mobile app and tap on your profile picture situated in the upper right corner.
2. Tap “View Profile” underneath your current username displayed in the banner at the top.
3. On your profile page, tap “Edit Profile.”
4. Scroll down until you see “Profile name.” Delete your current username and replace it with your new one.
5. Remember to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Save” to finalize the change.
Understanding Steam Account Names and IDs
While you can change your public username, keep in mind that there are other Steam identifiers that remain permanent. When you created your account, you were assigned a unique 17-digit SteamID – this number acts as your unique identifier within the platform. Additionally, you have an account name that is used for logging into Steam. These identifiers cannot be modified, even by Steam staff. So, while you can change how others see you online, your core account details will remain unchanged.
