How to Disable Autoplay and Other Apple Music Automations

Apple Music is a popular music streaming service, packed with features and customization options. However, one common annoyance is the automatic playback of music after a song, playlist, or album ends. This is due to the Autoplay feature, which can be easily disabled across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Disabling Autoplay in iOS and iPadOS

By default, Apple Music on iPhones and iPads automatically starts another song after the current one finishes. This is controlled by the Autoplay feature, represented by an infinity symbol in the app settings. To disable it, follow these steps:

1.

Launch the Apple Music app.

2.

Start playing any song.

3.

Expand the track for a fullscreen view.

4.

Tap the icon at the bottom right of the screen.

This will open additional playback controls.
5.

Tap the infinity symbol icon to turn off Autoplay.

The Autoplay queue should disappear, and the infinity symbol will become see-through.

Disabling Autoplay in macOS

Autoplay is also enabled by default in the macOS version of Apple Music. Disabling it is just as straightforward, with minor variations in button locations:

1.

Launch the Apple Music app.

2.

Select the icon at the top-right of the dashboard.

3.

Select the option to manually remove all tracks from the queue.

Restricting Apple Music Data Usage

Apple Music can access songs, artists, and albums that aren’t stored locally on your device if it’s allowed to use mobile data. To restrict data usage and force the app to rely on Wi-Fi or only play locally stored tracks, follow these steps:

1.

Launch the Apple Music app and select your profile icon.

2.

Locate the ‘Cellular Data’ option and slide the toggle to the off position.

Disabling Handoff

Handoff is a convenient feature that syncs app activities between Apple devices signed in with the same Apple ID. This includes automatically playing back Apple Music across devices. To prevent Handoff from sharing Apple Music information, follow these steps:

1.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.

2.

Select ‘General’ and then ‘Handoff.’

3.

Slide the toggle to the off position.

Disabling CarPlay

CarPlay is a feature that automatically starts playing music from your iPhone or iPad in compatible vehicles. To disable it:

1.

Launch the Apple Music app on your iPhone.

2.

Select ‘Settings,’ then ‘CarPlay.’

3.

Locate the CarPlay settings and ensure it’s disabled.

By customizing these features, you can personalize your Apple Music experience and enjoy a more seamless and enjoyable listening experience. Remember to check out other helpful tips and tricks for optimizing your Apple Music settings and discovering new music.
