A decade after helping a generation of music lovers discover his profound songwriting, Hozier has surpassed his own success with the release of ‘Too Sweet.’ Despite ‘Take Me To Church’s’ enduring popularity, it never reached the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart. However, ‘Too Sweet’ has ascended to the summit, marking an extraordinary achievement for Hozier.
Despite releasing critically acclaimed albums and smaller collections in the years since his debut, nothing has quite matched the mainstream success of ‘Take Me To Church.’ Therefore, the ascent of ‘Too Sweet,’ released as part of an EP for tracks that didn’t make the album’s final cut, is all the more remarkable.
Hozier expressed his gratitude to his listeners in an Instagram video, stating, ‘I’m massively taken by surprise by it. I just want to say thank you so, so much for your support… it means the world to me.’
Not only has ‘Too Sweet’ topped the chart, but its journey to the No. 5 debut earlier this month marked the longest wait between top 10 singles for an artist since The Beatles returned to the chart with ‘Come Together’ last November.
Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ also made a notable debut this week, entering the Hot 100 at No. 7 with almost 20 million streams in its first week. Carpenter’s performance at Coachella and references to her boyfriend in her song ‘Nonsense’ have further fueled the buzz surrounding her music.
With the success of Hozier’s ‘Too Sweet’ and Carpenter’s ‘Espresso,’ it seems that a new golden age for pop music may be upon us.
