Huawei is gearing up to launch a new smartphone with a unique twist: a tri-foldable display. This innovative device, officially named the Huawei Mate XT, was recently teased in a video clip, revealing its unconventional form factor. While the name itself might not immediately evoke the device’s tri-foldable nature, it aligns with Huawei’s existing naming conventions. The ‘T’ in the name could, however, be a subtle nod to the tri-fold design.
The Mate XT was first spotted in the hands of Huawei CEO Yu Richard, and subsequent teasers have hinted at its capabilities. When fully unfolded, the phone’s three displays, connected by two hinges, combine to create a sizable 10-inch tablet. Conversely, folding the screens allows the device to transform into a traditional smartphone, albeit a slightly thicker one due to the folding mechanism.
Huawei’s latest teaser video, highlighted by GSM Arena and TechRadar, indicates that the Mate XT will fall under the company’s ‘Ultimate Design’ brand, a successor to the ‘Porsche Design’ partnership that ended a few years ago. This suggests that the Mate XT, as a cutting-edge device with a novel feature, will be priced at a premium.
Due to the ongoing ban on Huawei hardware in the United States, it’s unlikely that the Mate XT will be available in the US market. However, the arrival of such a groundbreaking tri-foldable smartphone could inspire other phone manufacturers to follow suit with similar offerings.
The Huawei Mate XT is scheduled for its official launch on September 10th, just a day after Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 16 reveal. This timing raises speculation about whether Huawei is strategically attempting to steal some of the thunder from Apple’s event. As is common practice in the tech industry, timing plays a crucial role in garnering attention and generating buzz.
