Following recent news about a potential revolutionary folding smartphone, Huawei has unveiled a new, less groundbreaking foldable phone, the Nova Flip. This upcoming device will be officially released soon, and Huawei has teased its design and features through a video shared on its Weibo social network page.
The Nova Flip distinguishes itself from current compact folding phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Motorola Razr 2024 by incorporating a small, square cover screen when folded. This design prioritizes usability when the phone is closed, allowing for the use of widgets and simple interactions. Unlike the larger cover screens on competitors, the Nova Flip’s screen takes up only about a quarter of the closed phone’s front panel, making it suitable for widgets rather than full-fledged apps.
The video also reveals two cameras and a flash next to the cover screen. Further details regarding specifications remain undisclosed. However, the teaser provides glimpses of other design elements including a power button (likely incorporating a side-mounted fingerprint sensor), a USB-C connector, and the hinge design.
Huawei emphasizes tactility and color in the video. The phone is depicted in a vibrant lime green hue, which extends throughout the video, suggesting that this color will be a prominent offering. Additional color options are likely to be introduced, but green stands out as a bold choice. The video focuses on the satisfying click sound and tactile feel when snapping the phone shut.
This isn’t Huawei’s first attempt at a compact foldable. In 2022, the company launched the P50 Pocket, a luxurious folding phone with a small circular cover screen. The Nova name has also been previously used for more affordable devices, suggesting that the Nova Flip will likely be priced competitively with the Razr 2024 rather than the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Huawei has confirmed that the Nova Flip will be officially unveiled in China on August 5th, leaving little time for anticipation to build before the launch.
