Hungary Striker Varga Released from Hospital After Facial Fracture Surgery

Hungarian forward Barnabás Varga has been discharged from the hospital and is back in his home country just two days after undergoing surgery for facial fractures. The injury occurred during a collision in Hungary’s European Championship match against Scotland. The news of Varga’s release comes as a positive sign for the Hungarian team, as they wait to see if they’ve qualified for the round of 16 as one of the four best third-place teams. His club, Ferencváros, shared a picture of Varga on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “Barnabás is back at home!”.

The incident happened midway through the second half of Sunday’s match against Scotland when Varga collided with goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Despite the concerning scenes and a nearly 10-minute stoppage for Varga’s treatment, Hungary went on to win the match 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time goal from substitute Kevin Csoboth. The impact of the collision was evident as several of Varga’s teammates were seen in tears while medical staff tended to him. Teammates shielded the stricken forward with blankets during the lengthy period of treatment.

The 29-year-old Varga was immediately taken to a hospital in Stuttgart after the injury. He underwent surgery on Monday after doctors confirmed multiple facial fractures. Hungary’s coach, Marco Rossi, and some of his staff, along with Ferencváros teammate Endre Botka, visited Varga in the hospital on Tuesday. Varga’s swift recovery and return home are a welcome sight for Hungary as they eagerly await the outcome of their European Championship campaign.
