The city of Hyderabad, a bustling metropolis in India, has been serving as the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana since the bifurcation of the state in 2014. As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, this arrangement was set to continue for a period of ten years. However, as of June 2, 2023, Hyderabad will officially become the exclusive capital of Telangana, marking the completion of the state’s bifurcation.
When the unified state of Andhra Pradesh was divided in 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the capital of both the newly formed Telangana and the residual Andhra Pradesh for a period of ten years. This was done to ensure a smooth transition and to allow both states time to establish their own capital cities.
However, even after a decade of separation, numerous unresolved matters persist between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including the division of assets. The Telangana government has been keen on addressing these issues and had scheduled a cabinet meeting to discuss the bifurcation. However, the meeting was reportedly postponed due to the Election Commission’s purported withholding of approval, citing the model code of conduct for the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, both the ruling Congress government and the primary opposition, BRS, have organized events to mark the completion of the bifurcation. The government has invited Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi to attend the festivities as the chief guest.
As Hyderabad transitions to being the exclusive capital of Telangana, it is expected to play a key role in the state’s continued development and growth. The city is already a major hub for technology, pharmaceuticals, and other industries and is expected to see even further growth in the years to come.
