Hygon Unveils New C86-7490 CPU: Customized Zen 1 Architecture with 64 Cores and DDR5 Support

Hygon, a Chinese company, has unveiled its new C86-7490 CPU, marking a significant advancement in their processor technology. This CPU boasts a customized Dhyana x86 IP, based on the AMD Zen architecture, offering a powerful performance boost.

The C86-7490 features a unique design, incorporating up to 64 cores and 128 threads, a significant leap from the 32 cores and 64 threads limit of the first-generation Zen core architecture. This enhanced processing power is made possible by the use of four 16-core CCDs (Central Compute Dies).

Hygon’s commitment to innovation is evident in the inclusion of two IO dies in the C86-7490, unlike the single IOD found in original Zen and Zen+ EPYC processors. This strategic decision enables the CPU to support the SP5 socket, offering greater space for expansion and accommodating the two IO dies.

Another noteworthy feature is the C86-7490’s support for 12-channel DDR5 memory, exceeding the capabilities of the original Zen EPYC processors that utilized DDR4. This upgrade enables faster and more efficient memory access, further enhancing the CPU’s performance.

Hygon’s C86-7490 CPU is available in two variants, the C86-7490 and C86-7390, with prices ranging from 35,000 RMB to 42,000 RMB, respectively. These prices translate to approximately $4,900 and $5,900 USD, making the C86-7490 a competitive option in the high-performance computing market.

The release of the C86-7490 is a testament to Hygon’s ongoing collaboration with AMD, HMC, and Global Foundries. This joint venture has yielded remarkable results, creating custom-designed chips that cater to the specific needs of Chinese companies. The C86-7490 is poised to become a key player in the Chinese technology landscape, empowering domestic businesses with cutting-edge processing power.
