In the first period, the Oilers seized control of the game, leading 2-0. Zach Hyman opened the scoring with a pass from McDavid, followed by Adam Henrique’s goal past Cam Talbot’s blocker. The Oilers dominated shots 15-7 in the first period.
Stuart Skinner denied Viktor Arvidsson’s attempt four-and-a-half minutes into the second period. McDavid assisted Hyman for another goal just 30 seconds later. During an Oilers power play, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins extended the lead to 4-0 with an assist from Draisaitl.
The Kings finally got on the scoreboard with a goal from Mikey Anderson, but their celebration was short-lived. Trevor Lewis’s goal was disallowed due to a hand pass. Adrian Kempe managed to score, assisted by Evan Bouchard, narrowing the Oilers’ lead to 4-2.
Trevor Moore’s tripping penalty late in the second led to a Leon Draisaitl power-play goal. Hyman completed his hat-trick five minutes into the third period with another McDavid assist. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored a late goal for the Kings, followed by Moore’s goal with just 1:11 remaining. Warren Foegele sealed the Oilers’ victory with an empty-net goal.
Skinner recorded 34 saves for the Oilers, while Talbot made 38 for the Kings. Game two of the series will take place on Wednesday.
