Hyzon Secures North America’s First Hydrogen-Powered Refuse Truck Order with GreenWaste

In a groundbreaking move for the waste industry, Hyzon Motors, a leading US-based hydrogen fuel cell system manufacturer, has announced a historic agreement with GreenWaste, a renowned recycling and innovation pioneer. This agreement marks the first-ever purchase order for 12 hydrogen-powered refuse trucks in North America, signifying a significant step towards decarbonizing the waste management sector.

Hyzon’s CEO, Parker Meeks, expressed the company’s pride in partnering with GreenWaste, highlighting the agreement as a testament to Hyzon’s leading Class 8 tractor and refuse collection vehicles. Meeks emphasized the growing demand for hydrogen-powered refuse collection, fueled by Hyzon’s high-performance hydrogen fuel cells. He further highlighted the compelling value proposition of the technology, offering zero-emission power to meet the demanding requirements of refuse trucks, ensuring consistent performance day in and day out.

This agreement arrives on the heels of Hyzon’s recent announcement regarding the Start of Production (SOP) of its revolutionary single-stack 200kW Fuel Cell System (FCS). This development enables Hyzon to manufacture standardized FCSs at scale for commercial sale, further accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty industries.

GreenWaste, with its commitment to sustainability leadership, is poised to become the first company in North America to commercially operate hydrogen-powered refuse collection vehicles. This move aligns with GreenWaste’s broader sustainability initiatives, including its ambitious 2030 goal of achieving a 45% reduction in total combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2022 baseline. Notably, the company already achieved a significant 36.3% reduction in these emissions in 2023.

The purchase agreement is a direct outcome of GreenWaste’s successful trial of Hyzon’s refuse FCEV. The trial encompassed several test routes throughout the Bay Area, evaluating payload, can-lifts, and range performance.

Tracy Adams, CEO of GreenWaste, underscored the company’s historical commitment to innovation, citing their pioneering role in commercially operating the world’s first full-sized electric side-loading waste collection truck seven years ago. Adams sees this latest investment in zero-emission technology as a continuation of GreenWaste’s leadership and commitment to sustainable resource recovery and recycling practices.

Hyzon’s refuse collection FCEVs will be collaboratively built by Hyzon and New Way Trucks, a leading refuse truck body manufacturer. This partnership combines New Way’s expertise in refuse collection with Hyzon’s focus on zero-emission power solutions, making hydrogen fuel cell electric refuse collection a reality for the North American waste and recycling industry.

Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer for New Way and Chairman of the National Waste and Recycling Association, expressed New Way’s excitement in collaborating with GreenWaste on this groundbreaking project. He emphasized GreenWaste’s long-standing partnership with New Way and highlighted the joint efforts with Hyzon to decarbonize the solid waste industry without compromising range or grid dependency.

Deliveries of the refuse FCEVs to GreenWaste are expected to commence as early as Q4 2025, marking a significant milestone in the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles for waste management in North America.
