The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is reminding motorists about an extended weekend closure of a short section of I-295, stretching from Warwick to Cranston. This closure, beginning Friday night, August 16th, is essential for the replacement of the structurally deficient Providence Street Bridge.
The closure will involve both full highway closures and lane reductions, with all lanes anticipated to reopen by 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20th. RIDOT is utilizing accelerated bridge construction techniques to replace the aging bridge, aiming to minimize long-term disruption to traffic flow.
During the weekend, the old bridge will be demolished, and the new one will be installed. This expedited process allows for the completion of the project in a shorter timeframe. The Providence Street Bridge, originally built in 1968, carries approximately 10,500 vehicles daily.
Providence Street will also be closed at the bridge, with local detours available via Route 2 and East Avenue. This project, a part of the RhodeWorks initiative and funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure and Improvement Act, aims to complete the bridge replacement by spring 2025.
However, it is important to note that all construction timelines are subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforeseen factors. RIDOT advises motorists to plan their travel accordingly and to expect delays during the closure period.
