Ianis Hagi, the son of Romanian football legend Gheorghe Hagi, was named in the starting lineup for Romania’s Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash against the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday. The 25-year-old winger made two substitute appearances during the group stage before starting his team’s final group match against Slovakia. Romania finished atop Group E, ahead of Belgium, with Hagi playing a significant role in their success.
Hagi currently plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Scottish Premiership club Rangers, having spent the previous season on loan at La Liga club Deportivo Alaves. He made his senior debut for Romania in 2018, coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 UEFA Nations League victory over Lithuania.
Ianis’ father, Gheorghe Hagi, is widely considered one of the greatest Romanian footballers of all time. The former attacking midfielder was a star during the 1980s and 1990s, playing for clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. He holds the record for most goals scored for Romania, with 35 goals in 124 appearances.
