Iarnród Éireann has commenced a public consultation process regarding the construction of a new train station at Moyross in Limerick city. The purpose of this process is to gather feedback and engagement from the local community to ensure their voices are incorporated into the development process. The proposed location for Moyross Station is situated to the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre, with strategic access points adjacent to both Corpus Christi Parish Church and Moyross Health Centre. This placement will provide convenient access to the civic heart of Moyross. The public consultation will run from Monday, May 20, until Friday, June 14. To further engage with the community, a public information evening will be held on Wednesday, June 5, from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Moyross Community Enterprise Centre. This initiative is funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Department of Transport’s Pathfinder Programme, which aims to deliver sustainable mobility projects across the country. The new station will be a valuable addition to the existing Limerick to Galway rail line, providing enhanced public transport links for Moyross’s growing population. It will offer seamless connectivity to Limerick city centre, Galway, Cork, Dublin, and beyond. The planning application for the new station is expected to be lodged in Winter 2024/2025. Subject to planning approval and the allocation of funding, the station is anticipated to open in 2026. Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, emphasized the significance of this strategic development for Moyross. He encouraged community participation in the consultation, highlighting that the feedback will play a crucial role in the ongoing design of the project. The new Moyross train station is anticipated to have a positive impact on local tourism by improving accessibility to major attractions and events. Furthermore, the enhanced connectivity is likely to stimulate economic growth by attracting more visitors and facilitating easier travel for residents and tourists alike. As part of a broader sustainable mobility initiative, the station will contribute to reducing carbon emissions by encouraging the use of public transport over private vehicles. The integration with other transport networks and local plans will provide a seamless and efficient travel experience for both daily commuters and tourists.
