IAS Officer’s Noise Pollution Concerns Spark Controversy in Madhya Pradesh

A social media post by Shailbala Martin, a senior IAS officer and additional secretary in the Madhya Pradesh government, has ignited a firestorm of controversy in the state. Martin’s post, questioning the noise pollution caused by loudspeakers at temples, has prompted calls for protests from religious groups and fueled a heated debate on social media.

The controversy erupted in the wake of the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy during a Durga idol immersion ceremony in Bhopal last week. The boy, who was dancing to loud music played by a DJ, collapsed and died. This incident spurred discussions about noise pollution on social media, with many questioning the lack of enforcement of noise regulations.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Martin expressed her concern over the incessant noise from temple loudspeakers that can be heard across multiple streets and extend late into the night. She questioned why these loudspeakers, which contribute significantly to noise pollution, seem to go unchecked.

Martin’s post was a response to a journalist who had raised questions about the disparity in the enforcement of noise regulations, particularly regarding the use of public address systems in mosques. The journalist pointed out that despite calls for the removal of loudspeakers from mosques, DJs and loud music continued to be played outside these places, suggesting a political motive behind the selective enforcement.

Martin also highlighted the fact that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had issued orders shortly after taking office, calling for the removal of loudspeakers from all religious places and a ban on DJs. She asserted that this order, if implemented diligently, would provide much-needed relief from noise pollution for everyone.

While some supported Martin’s stance on noise pollution, her post has attracted strong criticism from others, particularly from religious groups. Chandrashekhar Tiwari, head of the rightwing organization ‘Sanskriti Bachao Manch’, has threatened to stage a protest against the IAS officer.

The controversy surrounding Martin’s social media post has exposed a deep divide in Madhya Pradesh regarding the enforcement of noise pollution regulations. It remains to be seen how the state government will address the concerns raised by Martin and navigate this complex issue involving religious sensitivities and the need to ensure a peaceful and noise-free environment for all citizens.
