Iberia and the University of Navarra have embarked on a partnership to advance cancer research and provide treatment to children from international locations. This collaboration involves a contribution of €60,000 from Iberia, designated to assist with travel expenses for these children and their families as they seek medical care at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra in Spain.
This initiative has already made a positive impact, as evidenced by the successful treatment of Marlon Dariel, a 7-year-old from Ecuador. Marlon received treatment for Hyper-IgM syndrome, a rare immunodeficiency, at the hospital’s Paediatric Cancer Centre, including a successful bone marrow transplant. Following his treatment, he and his family returned to Ecuador on flight IB6461, celebrating their journey with a personalized cake at Iberia’s Velázquez Premium Lounge.
The partnership was officially established in Pamplona by Álvaro Balibrea, the University’s manager, and Beatriz Guillén, Iberia’s Director of Global Sales. This collaboration aims to grant access to specialized medical treatments in Spain for children who are unable to receive the necessary care within their home countries. Mr Balibrea expressed his delight about this agreement and highlighted the collaborative efforts of the airline and the University in promoting paediatric cancer research and extending treatment opportunities to children from various nations. He emphasized that part of the University of Navarra’s mission is to disseminate knowledge and science for the benefit of society, which aligns with the objectives of this partnership.
Beatriz Guillén, Iberia’s Director of Global Sales, shared her sentiments, stating that the airline believes in a purpose-driven approach to flying. She pointed out that this initiative serves as a prime example of their social impact strategy, which aligns with their mission to generate prosperity by connecting people globally.
