Iceland Presidential Election 2024: Close Race as Polls Reveal Tight Contest

Iceland’s Presidential election process is set to commence on Saturday, June 1, with a total of 12 candidates vying for the position. The incumbent, Gudni Th Johannesson, has chosen not to run for re-election. The race has become increasingly intriguing as surveys conducted two days prior to the election suggest a close proximity among the top three candidates.

One of the polls indicates a decisive lead for Katrin Jakobsdottir, a former prime minister. However, another poll places Jakobsdottir in second place. In a third poll, there was a tie between Jakobsdottir and Halla Tomasdottir, an equality advocate. Apart from the tie, Tomasdottir enjoyed a lead in one poll and second place in another. Halla Hrund Logadottir and Baldur Thorhallsson trailed behind in third and fourth places, respectively.

Iceland’s electoral process allows any individual to contest in the election with around 1,500 signatures in support. This provision led to a substantial number of initial candidates, with more than 60 individuals collecting signatures. Out of these, 13 qualified for the June 1st election.
