Dennis Mulqueen, a 65-year-old Boise resident, was identified by authorities as the suspect in the tragic shooting of Ada County Sheriff’s Deputy Tobin Bolter. The incident transpired during a traffic stop on Saturday night, resulting in the deputy’s fatal injury.
Approximately 30 minutes following the initial shooting, police located Mulqueen’s abandoned vehicle and subsequently apprehended him outside a residence. Despite attempts by the police tactical unit to persuade him to surrender, he initiated gunfire shortly after midnight, prompting an officer to return fire and strike him. Mulqueen was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Mulqueen possessed an outstanding misdemeanor warrant at the time of the incident, but authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Detectives are actively seeking information from anyone who may have interacted with Mulqueen in the days leading up to the tragedy.
The death of Deputy Bolter marks a somber milestone, as he becomes the first deputy to be killed in the line of duty in the county’s history. Sheriff Matt Clifford expressed profound grief and acknowledged the sacrifice made by Bolter, who dedicated his life to serving and protecting the community.
