IDF Commanders’ Resignations: A Sign of Accountability and a Challenge to the Government

The recent wave of IDF commanders’ resignations has been met with mixed reactions. While it is disappointing to lose experienced military leaders, it is also refreshing to see individuals in leadership roles taking responsibility for their failures. This stands in stark contrast to the Israeli government’s evasive tactics and unwillingness to acknowledge its own shortcomings.

The resignation of Maj.-Gen. after 38 years of service is particularly significant. In his resignation letter, he explicitly stated his desire to take accountability for the October 7 debacle. Additionally, Brig.-Gen. Amit Saar’s resignation, although prompted by personal health reasons, highlights the broader failures of intelligence analysis in foreseeing and responding to the impending attack.

The ripple effect of October 7 has extended beyond these high-profile resignations. In February, an IDF intelligence officer resigned over the failure to anticipate Hamas’s invasion, and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi has indicated his intention to step down by the end of the year.

While these commanders have taken responsibility for their actions, the same cannot be said for the Israeli government. Despite Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s initial admission of accountability, he has since backtracked and shifted blame elsewhere. This deflection tactic has been echoed by other coalition members, who have sought to distract their audience and avoid culpability.

The Israeli public, however, is not easily fooled. History has taught them the importance of remembrance and accountability. The IDF generals who have resigned have demonstrated an understanding of this responsibility, and they have acted accordingly. It is now incumbent upon the government to follow their example and acknowledge its own failures.

If the government fails to do so, it will forever be remembered for its lack of accountability and its attempts to sweep its mistakes under the rug. History will not absolve them, and the Israeli people will not forget their betrayal.
