Harshita Chandra, an IIM graduate from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has taken an innovative approach to combatting waste. Witnessing firsthand the wasteful practices of companies during her employment, she decided to create a business that turns discarded materials into valuable products.
In 2020, she founded UpcycleLux, a startup that repurposes and upcycles old materials into unique and sustainable fashion items. Upcycling and recycling techniques are employed to transform discarded items such as plastic bottles, used plastic, wood bark, leather scraps, and old T-shirts into useful products like pen stands, laptop stands, mobile stands, and shirts. These handcrafted items are then sold online, providing a platform for both environmental responsibility and economic opportunity.
UpcycleLux is more than just a business; it’s a movement. The company advocates for environmental conservation and aims to create a positive impact on the world. It provides employment opportunities for over 100 individuals, contributing to the local economy.
Beyond its commitment to sustainability, UpcycleLux is the first carbon-neutral and waste-free sustainable fashion market in India. The company operates on a zero-plastic packaging policy, further demonstrating its commitment to minimizing environmental impact. With headquarters in Delhi, UpcycleLux is estimated to be worth Rs 15 crore, and it continues to expand its reach, bringing its eco-friendly products to both large cities and smaller towns.
The journey of UpcycleLux is a testament to Harshita Chandra’s dedication to sustainability and her entrepreneurial spirit. Her initiative has not only created a successful business but also inspired others to embrace responsible consumption and sustainable practices. Through UpcycleLux, she is demonstrating that environmental conservation and economic success can go hand in hand.
