IMD Forecasts Wet Spell, Thunderstorms, and Gusty Winds Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a period of wet weather marked by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across parts of India. This wet spell is expected to impact eastern and central India until May 14th, while southern peninsular India will experience these conditions until May 16th. The forecast indicates that northern India will encounter rainfall due to a Western Disturbance developing into a cyclonic circulation over northern Pakistan, along with additional cyclonic circulations over west Uttar Pradesh and south Rajasthan. IMD has issued an update on Twitter (formerly known as X) stating that light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is probable in Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan within the next three hours. According to the latest forecast, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand may witness widespread rainfall on May 12th, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. This activity is anticipated to subside thereafter, with isolated precipitation expected on May 13th and 14th. Several states in northern and central India, such as Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa, are likely to experience varying degrees of rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds on May 12th. Rajasthan is anticipated to have similar weather conditions for the following four days. The coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Karnataka can expect scattered to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and isolated heavy rainfall in some coastal areas. Northeastern states may encounter scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds from May 12th to 15th, potentially intensifying to widespread rainfall from May 16th to 18th. The IMD has also predicted a fresh spell of heat wave in parts of northwest India from May 16th, which may result in significant temperature increases. While no considerable changes in maximum temperatures are anticipated in northwest India within the next 24 hours, subsequent days may witness a rise of about 3-5 degrees Celsius. Notably, after experiencing elevated temperatures, Delhi-NCR witnessed a severe thunderstorm, strong winds, and rainfall on Friday evening, while adjoining areas like Noida and Ghaziabad faced an intense dust storm.
