IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rainfall Across India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in several states of India, effective from July 1st. This alert extends to Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gujarat, Assam, and Meghalaya, lasting until July 4th. The weather agency has also issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Goa, valid until July 5th. The IMD has cautioned that active monsoon conditions are expected to persist over Northwest, East, and Northeast India for the next 4-5 days.

The IMD’s rainfall prediction highlights the areas most likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall: Arunachal Pradesh (July 1st, 4th, and 5th), Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim (July 1st and 2nd), Gujarat State (July 1st), Assam and Meghalaya (July 1st and 2nd), Uttarakhand (July 2nd), Himachal Pradesh (July 1st and 2nd), Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh (July 1st-3rd), Rajasthan (July 3rd-5th), Bihar (July 1st and 2nd), Saurashtra and Kutch (July 2nd), Gujarat Region (July 2nd, 3rd, and 5th), Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa (July 1st).

Additionally, the IMD predicts rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Northwest and Central India during the next five days. Heavy rainfall is likely in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh from July 1st to 5th. West Rajasthan is expected to experience heavy rainfall throughout the same period, while East Madhya Pradesh (July 1st, 3rd, and 4th) and Chhattisgarh (July 1st-3rd) will also see heavy precipitation.

Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are predicted to experience very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days. Rainfall is also anticipated in East India during the next five days. Bihar is expected to experience heavy rainfall from July 1st to 5th, while Gangetic West Bengal (July 1st, 4th, and 5th), Odisha (July 1st), and Jharkhand (July 1st-3rd) are also forecast to see heavy rainfall. Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Gujarat State are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days. Rainfall is also predicted for Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam during the same period. Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Interior Karnataka are expected to experience rainfall in the coming days.

Heavy rainfall is very likely in Gujarat state, Konkan, and Goa from July 1st to 5th. Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to experience heavy rainfall on July 1st and 2nd. A similar situation is anticipated for Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe (July 1st-3rd), and South Interior Karnataka (July 3rd-5th).

The IMD has also issued flash flood warnings. Flash floods are likely in Saurashtra and Kutch, south Konkan, Goa, and Coastal Karnataka over the next 24 hours. Flash flood risks are also anticipated in Assam and Meghalaya, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next 24 hours.
