The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a respite from heatwave conditions over the eastern and southern peninsular regions of the country. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms is anticipated to bring relief until May 10th. However, a fresh heatwave spell is expected to hit the western regions of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh over the next five days. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Telangana, effective from tomorrow. Isolated pockets over Saurashtra, Kutch, and Gujarat are also likely to experience heatwave conditions over the next five days. Heatwave conditions are expected to prevail in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and interior Karnataka on May 6th and 7th, while western Rajasthan is likely to witness similar conditions from May 7th to 10th. The IMD has also predicted heatwave conditions for east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh from May 8th to 10th. The Met Department has forecasted a rise in maximum temperatures by about 2°C over most parts of the plains of Northwest India, except for east Uttar Pradesh, where temperatures are likely to fall by 2-3°C. The maximum temperatures are expected to drop by about 3-5°C over East India during the next three days, with no significant change thereafter. A cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over northeast Assam, while another cyclonic circulation is present over northeast Bihar in the lower tropospheric levels. Strong southwesterly winds are expected to continue to prevail from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India at lower tropospheric levels until May 7th. These winds are likely to cause certain effects in the northeastern region. According to the IMD press release, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience “light to moderate rainfall accompanied with isolated thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds” over the next seven days. Other regions likely to receive rainfall in the next five days include: “Isolated heavy rainfall” Hailstorm activity has also been predicted over south interior Karnataka on May 7th.
